Starving Artist

My photo
I'm a senior in highschool with an unhealthy love for illustration and comic books. My ispiration comes from surrealism, but lately my interests in psychology and art therapy have been a raging force in the subject matter of my work.

Concentration #5

I wanted to concentrate on contrast in this piece so I used black matte board and started createing the high lights first. I used sharpie marker and spray paint for the clock work pieces. The dripping effect is due to the paint I used. Thanks Ryan for your help :)

Cocentration #4

Depression is common and comes in a plethora of forms. Specifically this is catatonic depression-where the subject curls up in the fetal position, unable to cop with the situation. This piece was frustrating in its developmental stage as the figure didn't seem right and the news paper in the back ground felt out of place. This piece made me depressed to the point of painting over everything in black. I dragged my fingers through the hair while they were still covered in paint, when I asked Mrs. Stone-Danahy for an opinion she said the lose finger painting might not be such a bad idea. Now before you is a finger painting done without brush or pencil in an attempt to create an expressive piece with an emphasis on contrast.

Concentration #3

Well here is bipolar disorder in all its sick glory. I wanted to make the sides contrast as much as possible, but still maintain the visual similarity in the sense that it was still the same person. By using prisma marker semi-transparent paper the paint bled through wonderfully and created drops on the more vexed side of the face. The structure was a bit of a challenge due to the Mono and pain killers that were fogging up my brain. In the end I just combined the structures to make the hair appear entangled.

Mental-illness

One word topic: Mental-illness

Sentence: I want to illustrate mental-illness through structure.

This year in the 2-d visual art portfolio I would like to illustrate the variations of mental illness through structure. I have always been interested in psychology starting with the mental health of children, but then as I delved deeper into the study of mental illness it occurred to me that mental health is a dynamic process. As the year continues I may chose to show specific mental disorders and the descent into darkness of mental chaos or show an extreme situation of mental instability in the beginning and illustrate intervention that can result in coping or healing.

Concentration #2

As my concentration evolves I will continue to explore mental illness through different forms and structures. #1 didn't really have a theme, but as my opening piece it was ambiguous and experimental this one however; explores a specific brand of mental illness called schizophrenia. Now there are 5 types, but this piece explores Paranoid schizophrenia, a mental condition that makes you believe in things that aren't true(like everyone is out to get you) suicidal tendencies, hallucinations, etc. I prepared my surface with spray paint and then added the paint drips. The eyes were a pain, but layering them with paint helped. I will go back into the face with darker shadows and the like when I have time, but overall i think this is stronger than my first one.
